Sodium metasilicate pentahydrate

Sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, formula Na₂SiO₃·5H₂O (actually the tetrahydrate of disodium dihydrogen orthosilicate with two cations). White square crystals or spherical granules. Non-toxic, odorless, easily soluble in water (solubility 50 g/100 g water at 20°C), melting point 72°C. Hygroscopic and deliquescent in air. Has the general properties of sodium silicate and sodium metasilicate, with calcium and magnesium binding capacity, especially for magnesium (>260 mg MgCO₃/g at 35°C, 20 min).

Directions for Use

Provides excellent buffering alkalinity in washing liquor, corrosion protection for light metals (aluminum, zinc, etc.), protection for glassware and porcelain, suspension and emulsification of dirt, and certain water softening. Concentrated solutions are corrosive to fabrics and skin; avoid direct contact. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Store sealed to prevent moisture absorption and deliquescence.
